Returning to Exercise After a Break

As the calendar turns to fall, it signals the start of the return to routine after enjoying a more relaxed summer schedule. This may mean returning to exercise after a break. While it may be tempting to jump right in, it’s best to use a gradual approach when returning to activity to avoid injury and build consistency.

Try these tips to ease back into exercise safely!

  • Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your break was due to injury or illness, check with a certified athletic trainer, physical therapist, or physician to make sure you are ready to return to exercise.
  • Always Perform a Proper Warm-Up and Cool Down: Opt for a dynamic warm-up to prepare your muscles for activity. Afterward, cool down with static stretches to improve flexibility and reduce soreness.
  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. Muscle soreness is normal at the start of a new exercise regime. However, if you feel sharp pain, discomfort, or excessive fatigue, chat with a healthcare professional.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Establish achievable short-term goals and celebrate each small win as you build your way back to your previous fitness level.
  • Grab a Workout Buddy or Use a Fitness App: Work out with a friend or use an app to track your progress. This can make it easier to stay motivated and keep yourself accountable for the goals you set.

Remember, consistency and gradual improvement are key! No two fitness journeys are the same, so listen to your body and progress at your own pace. Celebrate your achievements and focus on the positive changes you are making for your health and well-being each step of the way!
