Summer is a great time to take your tennis game outside. With sunny skies and longer days, there’s no better season to hit the outdoor courts! But the warmer weather also brings extra risks, so it’s important to take the right precautions.
- Hydration is key: Drinking water before, during, and after playing helps prevent dehydration, which can sneak up quickly in the heat. For longer matches, a sports drink can be helpful to replace electrolytes lost through sweat.
- Beating the heat starts with smart scheduling: The hottest part of the day, is between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. That is when athletes are most at risk for overheating. Playing early in the morning or later in the evening can reduce fatigue and help players stay sharp and safe.
- Choosing the right gear makes a difference: Lightweight, breathable clothing in light colors can help the body stay cool. A hat or visor and sunglasses protect the face and eyes, while sunscreen with at least SPF 30 shields the skin from harmful UV rays.
- Athletes (and parents of younger athletes) should watch for signs of heat exhaustion: Dizziness, cramps, headache, or nausea are signals to stop, rest in the shade, and rehydrate immediately.
Taking regular breaks, staying in tune with how your body feels, and knowing when to cool down are all part of smart, safe summer play!
At Orthopedic ONE, we’re proud to support athletes by promoting safe habits, preventing injuries, and helping players stay on top of their game all summer long!
