Sport Specialization in Youth Athletes

With growing evidence of the correlation between sport specialization and overuse injuries in athletes, sport specialization has become a hot topic in the youth sports community.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) classifies sport specialization as “year-round participation in a single sport, usually at the exclusion of other sports”.

The effect of sport specialization is three-pronged and impacts young athletes on a physical, mental, and psychosocial level.
